Description

Written in 1930, these pages were reproduced from Dr. Wiley’s book. He sat down at the age of 84 to compile his notes in the writing of this book. The “Pure Food and Drug Act” was enacted in 1906. This booklet captures the amazing story of the National Food and Drugs Law intended to protect the health of the people, enacted by Dr. Harvey Wiley, who was the first head of the Bureau of Chemistry (now known as the FDA). With the list of ‘offenders’ growing – “sugar interests, canners, fruit industry, liquor rectifiers, flour millers, meat packers, and patent-medicine fraternity” – With the Poison Squad, Dr. Wiley found against the adulteration of food products and what should be suitable for human consumption. Under his leadership, the Bureau was a highly respected scientific and educational institution from 1906-1912. In 1912, Dr. Wiley stated “Who is to know the motives of those in government that ignore the facts while perpetuating the unbound greed of the few in industry who are willing to compromise the health of the nation to serve their own interests?” The Lee Foundation for Nutritional Research was honored and proud to make this book available.  31 pages
