CATALYSTS, ENZYMES, HORMONES, VITAMINS AND MINERALS by John Courtney, B.S., I.A.P.M.

A catalyst is best defined as a factor that stimulates chemical or metabolic changes, without itself being changed or lost. As an example, vitamins are the catalytic factors in foods which enable us to metabolize the minerals as well as perhaps the proteins, fats and carbohydrates contained in the food. Hormones are the catalytic factors made within the body by the endocrine glands. We would probably not be too far off if we said that vitamins are the hormones of plants.

The various estrogenic and androgenic effects are now being found in wheat germ oil, in addition to the tocopherol effect, which seems to be only that of an antioxidant to protect the more important factors. Here is where there appears to be a true overlapping action of vitamins and hormones.

There seems to be no doubt at this time about the life shortening effect of vitamin deficiencies. Yet, so often such deficiencies are overlooked or ignored. For example, if a man becomes old and senile at 65 or 90, no special attention or alarm is aroused. We simply accept this variation as a natural phenomenon. On the other hand, if a dog or race horse or other valuable animal suddenly loses its physical integrity long before its time, the owner looks for some reason.
